MCA, Jackline Nyangara, makes city pavement her parking spot

This is the car of a Nairobi county rep that was parked on the pavement of General Kago Street on June 5.

Nominated MCA Jackline Nyangara was comfortable enough for her picture to be taken by The Nairobian even though her BMW was parked on the pavement.

She told this writer: “I know you are taking pictures of my car. Take as many pictures as you can before I remove it but be assured that anytime I come and miss a parking space in the whole city I will just park here.“

It an offence to park on a pavement or sidewalk, according to city by-laws. If one breaks the law, county askaris can clamp and tow the vehicle and in case of damage or loss during this process, the city government cannot be held responsible.

Such vehicles should pay clamping fees or towing fees and failure to pay within 60 days, may lead to disposal of the vehicle through an auction.

Motorists part with Sh3,000 for their seized saloon cars to be released.

As a Member of the County Assembly, Nyangara is a lawmaker.

In the recent past the Kidero Administration and MCAs have been at the loggerheads over parking for their cars.

County reps have condemned city askaris for towing away their cars parked illegally.

Head of the county government ticketing Tom Tinega told The Nairobian his department has allocated each of the 127 MCAs parking space on City Hall Way as well as Mama Ngina, General Kago and Muindi Mbingu streets.

He wondered why MCA Nyangara chose to park her BMW at the entrance of a shop.

Businessman Abdul Habidlong — owner of the boutique where the BMW was parked — said he has complained to City Hall that the MCA has been parking her car at the entrance to his shop.

“The lady MCA regularly comes to park her vehicle at this entrance and my customers cannot get enough space to enter in the shop. Further, her vehicle blocks customers who are window shopping,” said Habidlong.
