Al Shabaab sleeper cells in Kariobangi North?

City News

Al Shabaab Sleeper Cells

According to accounts from residents, the al Shabaab terror group could be having a sleeper cell in Kariobangi North.

They talked of foreigners being brought to the area by two Kenyans residing in neighbouring Korogocho slums.

The two Kenyan individuals own some of the shanties on the grabbed piece of land. The aliens never interact with the outside community and are usually hostile to ‘strangers’, according to locals while describing the secretive and suspicious behaviour of the land encroachers.

“They were brought here by their chairman who lives near a mosque in Korogocho. We suspect some of them have links to the al Shabaab,” said William Kinyua, chairman of Kariobangi Light Industries Jua Kali Association.

A possible terrorist attack

Some locals who did not want to speak on record for fear of reprisal, insisted that they suspected the ‘foreigners’ due to their peculiar habits. “The people are not engaged in any meaningful activity, they are not welcoming and we hear they are armed,” said a resident who sells clothes adjacent to the shanty town.

A sleeper cell is a secretive group of spies or terrorist agents that remain inactive within a target population until ordered to act.

Area Administration Police Commander Charles Mongira said the alleged aliens migrated from Korogocho settling on the disputed piece of land. He did not rule out the possibility of some of them harbouring ill motives.

“I will deploy my officers there because we don’t want to dismiss such information,” he added. Local and international intelligence agencies have indicated a possible terrorist attack in the city. The government says it is in control of the security situation.
