The newly-elected Students Organisation of Nairobi University (Sonu) chairman Paul Ongili aka Babu Owino spent Sh4 million in the elections.
“ The funds that I used to run my campaigns came from contributions by students and friends,” the controversial First Year Law student told Campus Vibe.
Babu, who will be joining second year next semester, was the Sonu Chairman two years ago. He graduated with a First Class in Actuarial Science and rejoined the university last year to pursue a Law degree.
“ I am using my new tenure to fight against the increase of fees in universities,” Babu said.
“ Instead of our government working hard to make education expensive, it should look for ways of making it not just affordable but a basic right for everyone. If they increase the fees, only a few will be able to afford higher education,” he added.
Babu has also warned the university against arbitrary suspension and expulsion of students.
“I will not allow injustice to be committed against fellow ‘comrades’. I am asking all suspended and expelled students to come back to the university upon which we will ensure that they are readmitted,” he said.
