Arts Lounge

In a male-dominated rap world, Kenyan female rapper Kuky is making waves and breaking barriers if her recent EP titled "Resilient Rhymes,"is anything to go by.

"Growing up, people like Nazizi and Jua Cali were among the artistes I used to listen to, and they inspired a hip-hop spirit in me. I looked up to them, but at the moment, I know I am dope and I have what it takes to take hip hop to the next level," she explains her musical journey.

With her unique style and powerful lyrics, she is challenging the status quo and proving that gender should never be a limitation in the world of music.

Through her music, she addresses social issues, empowers women, and shares her personal experiences, creating a powerful connection with her audience.

By fearlessly expressing herself through her art, Kuky is not only making a name for herself but also inspiring other aspiring female artists to pursue their dreams. Her success serves as a reminder that talent knows no gender boundaries and that anyone can achieve greatness with passion and hard work.

Industry newbie

Despite being a newbie in the industry she has gone over and beyond in perfecting her craft.

"I have had a couple of challenges in the industry but I believe this is what proves the mettle of between the wheat and chaff," she says.

"Pushing a career in music has never been easy. First of all, people have ignored me over and over in the industry, balancing work and music has never been easy and to add the pain to the injury, breaking through as a female rapper is also another huge task that one ought to go through," she adds.

Her musical journey is truly epic and she serves as an inspiration to all the young girls willing to play in the 'Big Boys' League. She defies stereotypes and challenges societal norms through her music.

With each lyric she delivers, she paves the way for more diversity and inclusivity in the rap industry. Her music is a testament to her talent.

Recently, Kuky dropped her five-track EP 'Resilient Rhymes'.

"This Extended Play serves as a significant milestone in my artistic journey; reflecting my growth, perspective, and unique style as an artiste. It showcases my diverse range of musical influences, allowing listeners to fully understand the depth and versatility of my craft. Through the songs, I aimed to express my authentic self and connect with my audience on a personal level. Each track explores a specific theme that resonates with my values, experiences, and artistic vision. Overall, my EP defines me as an artiste by capturing my artistic identity and leaving a lasting impression," she says.

First track on the EP is Peng. This song is basically about giving women the confidence that they need to understand that they are beautiful and they can do whatever they want to. Her boldness in defying expectations sets an example for others to embrace their own individuality and express themselves authentically.

Following closely is a feel-good song, Waka. "This is basically a song for the season, whether you are hanging out with your friends and you want to vibe to a good song, this is your jam as it provides escapism and good vibes," she says

The third song off the EP is Cheki Dem. This is also for the girl-child according to Kuky, Women don't give themselves enough credit about who they are, the beauty they possess or even the positive outlook of life and this necessitated her to bring to life such a banger to celebrate them.

The second last song in the EP is Bundaz League. "this is basically a song that talks to me, I wrote it when I was mad and as you understand it is a drill beat. So I went ham on reflecting and expressing how I feel about myself and my career," she explains.

And last but not least, is a Chali, a song that she says caught her by surprise due to its prominence from the EP it has become one of the most famous hits in the project. The song basically tells ladies to shoot your shot to a guy and there is no shame whatsoever.

Kuky is not just an artist; she is a catalyst for change within the rap industry and beyond. We eagerly await what she will bring next as she continues to shape the future of music with her unwavering spirit and unapologetic authenticity.

"This particular EP has the power to transport listeners to different emotional landscapes and places, allowing fans to temporarily detach from their worries and immerse themselves in the sonic experience," she says.
