Bobby Mapesa and Bamboo

Months after he announced that he had seen the light and that he was ready to follow the righteous way, raunchy rapper Bobby Mapesa released Ndio, his debut gospel song late last year.

The single that is featured in the rapper’s new album Mtoi wa Mungu was the first indication that the Gwara Winch singer had embraced gospel music.

However, things seems to have taken a turn and it is not clear which way Bobby Mapesa is following.

This week, together with Team Mistari, the rapper released yet another not-so-virtuous hit, Nawapenda Wote in which Bobby Mapesa goes back to his characteristic raunchy style.

The song is a ‘bad boy’ hit whose theme surrounds a player’s lifestyle. Bobby Mapesa is seen idolising a video vixen in scenes that might not see the light of day on national TV.

This is not the first such video Bobby Mapesa has released since he announced he had gotten saved last year. In yet another track with Calvo Mistari called Sema Mapesa drops lyrics that in some circles may be branded X-rated.

It has not been easy for some brothers to stick to gospel even after announcing that they had gotten transformed.

Just last week, Pulse came across yet another secular-turned-gospel star, Bamboo, at Club Space where he was partying hard and freely enjoying alcohol. Many will remember how the singer got converted after giving a sensational story on how God appeared to him and told him to get born again. And in a script that didn’t sound so new, Bamboo went ahead to narrate how his girlfriend had visited hell.

“So the Lord sent me to Uganda where I met this beautiful evangelist Erika who is now my fiancée. She wrote a book with her uncle, Evangelist Patrick Wandera about her life. Her grandmother was a witch, so Erika found herself dedicated to Satan at a very tender age.

Sometime after her childhood initiation, Chameleon of Uganda initiated her into a higher level of Satanism and took her to the source of the Nile by force. He got into a boat with her and his assistant who was steering the boat.

Chameleon then dropped two eggs into the water, recited an incantation and a whirlwind came with a fish big enough to fit 30 or so people came and opened its mouth,” read the sensational post that Bamboo released around Christmas season, last year.

Back then, Bamboo claimed he had had gotten back to Christ and that his fiancée had been delivered from Satan’s bondage after seven years.

“We are saved by the grace of God. As for me, I am keeping on,” said Collo, the most recent converted secular singer.

“As for me, I am focused towards the prize,” he added.

Collo was attending a Sauti Sol event in Buruburu in the company of his wife.

Collo aside, many secular artistes who have jumped ship and joined gospel don’t seem to be making their breakthrough in their new life.

Apart from Size 8 and now Collo whose Bazokizo collabo with Bruz Newton has managed good media buzz, the rest who have crossed over are yet to make a mark.

Besides, revisiting Bobby Mapesa and Bamboo’s scenarios, it remains debatable if some of these converted entertainers truly understand what they are getting into.
