Every Friday, for the last 15 years, Pulse has stood out as your favourite pull-out.

Who are the current personalities behind your favourite entertainment weekly?

What are they really like, as individuals?

We bring you a rare glimpse into the real persons behind The Pulse.

Stevens Muendo aka Thamba Ngwenze - Pulse Editor

Stevens Muendo Photo:Courtesy

He is the editor and leader of the Pulse crew.

Often dressed in designer wear, he is a true ‘people’s person,’ and will always be the first one to bring the Pulse Team together, even outside of the office.

A fun man, who embodies team loyalty.

Peter Ndoria aka Ndoch - Sub Editor

‘Ndoch’ as he is known is that wry and dishevelled editor who, complete with his afro and sideburns, is like a guy who stepped straight out of a 1970s movie and into the news room.

A very clever fellow too, he’sthe guy literally behind our cheeky headlines and captions.

Tony Mochama aka Smitta Smitten

He is, in some ways, the face of Pulse.

Irreverent and intellectual, he loves books (which he writes) as he does his vodoski and rock.

Sober and analytical by day, he can be wild when the moon is out; and is way, or is it wee, eccentric.

Caroline Nyanga aka CNN

One of the longest serving members of the team, CNN is the ‘mamasita’ of the magazine.

A sweet person, CNN is the mental archive of the Pulse who can take you right back to the celebrities of December of 2003.

Peris Wambugu aka Peri Peri

One of the newer members of the Pulse crew, Peris is the ‘Go To’ girl of the magazine.

When anything is being organised, Peris, with her permanently quizzical air, is the Miss Can-Fix-It of the crew. She is the new fashionista who is on point with the trends. And like all of us, she can party.

Fred Kagonye aka Fred the Red

He is one of the most hardworking of the current Pulse crew, in terms of story delivery.

Fred is also that guy who tries to attend every meeting, and just be there and on point.

He does have this silly dance, though, where he paws the air like a kangaroo on glue and we think that he will one day start his ‘Ethics’ dance group with a ‘new position’. Get him Fanta all night long and he will run riot.

Ahadi Wambui aka Ahadi-Kenya

She looks like one of our cover girls, but in reality, is the girl behind many of our cover stories.

Salty at times, sweet at others, Ahadi is Pulse’s pendulum lassie, but the lady you want on your team. She is not the type to predict… you just may never see her coming! True papz!

Bonnie Mithika aka Pweza

Calm, quiet, reflective, effective, Bonnie is the chain-smoking model of the cub journalist.

He is the brain and the pen behind many of Pulse’s big scoops…exclusives, and a joy of a boy to work with. The other day as we were doing our tour of the Coast, he came up this ‘Pweza’ name and we gladly nicknamed him so.

Rose Kwamboka aka Kwa Box

Now on the periphery of Pulse (in charge of a younger audience) but still with us, Rose Kwamboka is that journalist who often thinks out of the box. She is the only vegetarian in the group who has been trying to recruit everyone to drop meaty stuff. She loves books.

Winnie Makena aka Make

Winsome, and with a winning smile, Winnie is both book reviewer and feature writer per excellence. Her spirit is like new wine, and Makena is a reason why we are a winning team. Just get her popcorns and movies and you are at peace with her.

Kevin Oguoko aka The G

Apart from being a good writer, Kevin Oguoko connects the Pulse Team to the realm of shifting possibilities in social media, new technologies and other inter-connectivity.

He is a man on a mission, and with clear youthful vision. Kevin is the real hip-hop guy in the team who has been trying to release his first hit all in vain.

Sheila Kimani aka Sheila-Diva

When she would appear on TV to promote Pulse magazine, we called her ‘Sheila the Diva.’

Ironic, because this Masters’ graduate is one of the most helpful folks, and our SDE touchstone. She is now with BBC but like we say, once Pulse Crew forever Pulse Crew, we have refused to let her go. And like a diva, Sheila loves all things beautiful. She is infectiously a happy soul.

Solo Koko aka The Real Solo

If there is a Pulse member who fits the Pulse party slogan ‘Get a Life’ best, then that crew member is one Solomon Koko.

The Boy can party from Thursday at Kiza till Sunday in Piccolina, and still look fresh; and if Ndoch can get a ‘Monday’ story out of him, then it would all be good. Solo is the life of the party.

He is also the big brother protecting our very own from ‘team mafisi’ and ‘slay queens’. He is the guy behind the ‘Legalize It’ campaign.

Esther Muchene aka Mushene

For a long time, Esther was the ‘Peris’ of Pulse. Happy and charming, Muchene likes chit-chat and can engage you on a party night as she gets high on ice cream.

She has a very unique way of looking at life. She likes fiction and can get the hell out of you with her crazy findings. She is a good events’ organiser and sometimes, she likes playing big sister.

Geoffrey Korio aka Rainmaker

The ‘rainmaker’ from Eldoret is the gentleman who tells readers where it is all going down every weekend. A witty guy, with a teasing, sardonic edge to his personality – and Smitta’s ‘protégé.’

Crystal Okusa aka The Fashionista

Pulse is where Crystal cut her fashion teeth, and she has now taken her act to TV. She is one of Kenya’s respected fashionista.

Sometimes, you would think she has walked out of a fashion magazine. Crystal is that cool chick, who laughs and has a perfect sense of what’s what; and what’s not. She is an uptown girl with an accent.

Tracy Gesare aka Racy

Tracy Gesare Photo:Angela Maina

In many ways both open and a mystery, Tracy is like The Edge that Pulse holds over all other competitors and imitators.

Who really knows what’s going on with Tracy, except that she is a terrific Pulser? She is widely connected in the showbiz industry and for that matter, she is the girl behind many of Pulse scoops. Racy is truly a fun person. What you see is what you get!

Mkala Mwaghesha aka Mkalaski

Like the Coastal area he comes from, Mkala is a cool guy who the hot ladies like.

He was a breath of fresh air when he first landed in Pulse, and remains as easy as a breeze blowing in from the sea. This is the chap who reviews all your music videos. He likes cool music and even cooler drinks.

Yolanda Rita Nimo aka Yolz

We all call her ‘Yolz.’

Like who really knows her second name? Fond of fatigue bottoms, Yolz is the tall Pulse lass who knows what trends are on, and what fads are on their way out, in this town.

She’s all ride-or-die. She is a party girl who likes watching over the rest during a party night. And yes, she can be a no-nonsense real Maasai girl!

Josphat Thiong’o aka JT

JT exemplifies the jolly good journalist, a guy who is serious with his career, meticulous with his work, but with a cool demeanour and a wonderful guy to hang out with. Yeye ni ‘yule’ msee.

Felix Kavii aka Mwanoo

There are many who firmly believe that Kavii has the best job in journalism – shooting curvy (and sexy skinny) chics for Pulse covers. But he also covers the event beat in an excellent way. All the models in this city have passed through his lenses. He is a charmer.

Tony Ngare - aka Banter

One of the longest serving crew members, Tony is all about football and cars. He is the face behind the Banter review column and the ultimate ‘Gooner’. The Banter is a cool guy who has remained loyal, a true team player.

Edward Kiplimo aka Kip

A very tall guy, Kiplimo has both the reach, and the frame of mind, to be the perfect paparazzo. Having learned from the best (Pius), this guy will bring you that photo that speaks a thousand words. Kip is cool and collected and yes, he likes his reggae chune.

David Gichuru aka Davie Brown

Light-skinned Davie is this crazy, fun, hard drinkin’ and hard-working member of the Pulse Fam. They call him brown boy and mamas keep on thinking they can ‘funga’ him.

Pius Cheruiyot aka Pyas

And, alas, we must say ‘adios’ to Pius, who we worked and partied with this whole decade; but now he has relocated to Amsterdam. Red light district, the real ‘red light’ now roams your streets.

He is the go-getter who has had guns pointed at him for unearthing showbiz crimes in this city.

Harrison Muriuki aka Hurry Harry

He is big and he is brilliant! And every illustration you see in Pulse is the work of Big Harry’s magic markers and pencils.

Joseck Mutoro aka Jose

And if you notice that the design of the two pages you’ve just read, with our pictures set, is perfect, then put the praise of Joseck – and his boss Dan Weloba whom the editor long made an ‘honorary Pulser.’

Benson Wanjau aka Benso

One of the best creatives Pulse has ever had, this new kid on the block is a genius of sorts. A fast learner and really a humble guy, Benson is a cool chap.
