Njoroge's casket

A sombre mood has engulfed the home of the late Meru University student leader Evans Njoroge where hundreds of mourners have gathered to lay him to rest.

Njoroge, who served as the university’s secretary general is being buried at his father’s farm after he was allegedly shot dead by police last month, February 27, during a demonstration by the students.

According to witnesses who spoke to the standard, Njoroge had fled to a private compound after the demonstrations turned ugly and was pursued by police officers.

Two armed police officers pursued him to the compound at Karebe Village and shot the deceased in the head as he fled.

Early this week, the university’s Vice Chancellor Japheth Magambo was sent on a compulsory terminal leave pending expiry of his term in June following the demos.

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed named Prof Charity Gichuki as his replacement, in an acting capacity.

Amina has ordered the school be reopened in a week’s time.
