Dear Uncle Ted

I have been with my boyfriend for almost a year now. But every time we go out, I think he feels ‘smaller’ than me because of what I own.

Unlike him, I am employed, own a car and I feel this is affecting our relationship. I love him but his low self-esteem is becoming too much of a problem because whenever we argue, it all comes back to my belongings. I’m confused. Is there a future here?

If your man is jobless and his self-esteem is zero, then I sniff trouble. Unless something drastic happens, you will propose, then suit him up, hire a car and give him money to go meet your parents.

Then you will pay your bride price, meet the costs of your dowry, wedding and honeymoon and also build the family home. When the baby comes, you will interrupt labour to reach into your handbag for cash to pay for fuel at the petrol station.

A year down the line, don’t be shocked if the watchie, who believes he is a real man, makes a pass at you. Let’s just pray the sex is great, while it lasts. What does your dad think of your boyfriend by the way?
