Kenya is among the many African countries that lost out the chance to experience the Tidal streaming service as it rolls out in two African countries.
Founded by music mogul Jay Z, Tidal, is a subscription-based music streaming service.
In efforts to expand his music business, the rapper has partnered with telecommunications company MTN to launch in Uganda, before heading to Nigeria.
First launched in South Africa on its own, according to reports, Tidal has now been in Uganda since 22nd August 2018.
Working with one of the largest mobile networks in the continent, Ugandan MTN subscribers who number over 10 million will gain access to exclusive music, videos, concerts and more available on the platform as part of their mobile payment plan.
“Uganda offers an opportunity to not only provide this exclusive entertainment content to a youthful population, in partnership with MTN Uganda, but also builds a long-term approach to improving opportunities for its young and talented artists,” MTN's Chief Marketing Officer, Olivier Prentout, said in a statement.
And in case you’re wondering why Uganda and Nigeria and not Kenya, the two former countries have a more youthful population.
It is estimated that 78% of Uganda’s population is below the age of 30 years while Nigeria has approximately 83% youth thus creating the right target market for Tidal services.
“I'm really looking forward to connecting with Uganda's musicians and helping to bring the Tidal music streaming experience to fans across the country. We know MTN customers will love the diverse playlists, livestreams, videos and original content available on Tidal,” Jason Kpana, Artist and Label Relations Head at Tidal was quoted saying.
The music platform will host music from Ugandan artists as it prepares to roll out officially in Nigeria.
