This is the painful moment a lion got a nasty shock when he tried to take down a water buffalo and ended up impaled on its huge horn - for 20 minutes.

The drama happened when a pride of hungry lions were on the hunt.

What looked look being a textbook kill took a twist when a young male lion ended up getting hooked on the buffalo's horn for 20 minutes.

The cape bull buffalo was on its own when the five lions got their claws into it, but it still took 90 minutes for them to finally bring the animal crashing down.

Roan Ravenhill, 28, a ranger at the Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa, was about 20 metres away when he captured the attack on camera.

He said: "There was a fight going on between the cape buffalo bull and a pride of lions and we could see them leaping upon it.

"Suddenly we could see that a young male had managed to get hooked by the buffalo's horn underneath his left front leg.

"He ended up stuck there for a good 20 minutes.

"After that time, he managed to get unhooked, but was limping for days afterwards we noticed.

"By a long way, it was the longest battle we have ever seen between lions and a buffalo – it was hard to watch, but that is the reality of nature."
