The DP said the National Youth Service (NYS) has also pledged contribution to the famine mitigation programme.

"We appeal to Kenyans of good will to contribute a percentage of their salaries to a PayBill Number that will be established soon by this National Steering Committee on Drought Response," Gachagua said.

The DP further urged Kenyans in food-secure counties to channel their food donations through their respective governors and county commissioners.

He said the drought response team will get the contribution from the mentioned offices and distribute to beneficiaries in different parts of the country.

"We send out a request to the media to offer TV and radio airtime or newspaper space to popularise the launched appeal and the [donation] PayBill Number," said Gachagua.

In October 2022, more than four million Kenyans in 23 counties faced starvation due to the prolonged drought in the Horn of Africa.

Twenty (20) counties in the Arid and Semi-Arid regions were seriously affected.

A large number of wild animals in various national parks also died due to starvation.
