As it is, lecturers are relentless in their quest for better pay. Well, things might change. Until then, here is a list of things to keep you busy
Get married and start popping kids
If there is anything Kenyan universities have taught me, it is that time and urgency are illusions for the disciplined and the education system is from disciplined. If you can, and have the ideal partner, it would be best to get on the journey of marriage while you still have viable organs and start your family. Hard as it may be to believe, it is highly likely that you will graduate when your first child is graduating from kindergarten.
Start a business
If you have a few coins stashed somewhere and have an entrepreneurial spirit, keep off betting and anything that sucks more money that it brings back. Instead, come up with a business plan and do something useful and legal while the union and the government continue playing hide and seek.
Short courses
Remember that driving course you keep on postponing? Remember the foreign language you were to start learning? By the time everyone is done deciding who has a bigger chest and what money can be paid, you will have completed at least one thing on your vision board and grown.
Travel
If you can, travel. See the world, immerse yourself in new cultures and learn to look outside of the box. After all, these are your prime years. Ergo, if your four-year course is being stretched to six years, you might as well cross something off your bucket-list during those long spells of free time.
Intern, volunteer, work
One day, you are in a lecture hall. The next, you are in an office being asked whether you have years of experience that go beyond your years on earth. It is important to have that in mind. Apply for internships, volunteer and if by any chance you get paid for it, do it with all your might. School might not always be there but as sure as corruption thrives in the nation, bills live on.
