An ambitious plan to privatise the main abattoir in Isiolo town is at an advanced stage.

Livestock chief officer Ali Dima said the move seeks to enhance safety and quality standards.

The county government inherited the slaughterhouse from the defunct county council but undertook major renovations and expansion over the last three years.

When questioned about the privatisation strategy, Mr Dima said: ''The abattoir has still not reached the required standards to cope with increase in population and at the same time maintain the requisite hygiene."

Sources said the plan would help the department to focus on managing the Sh1 billion abattoir that stalled early last year when it was nearly 90 per cent complete.
