A radio station was blamed for causing the 1994 Rwandan genocide by spreading hate speech, which ended in the killing of close to one million Tutsis.
This means the power of radio cannot be underestimated. In Kenya, while we are lucky that has not happened, we must be careful with all the vernacular radio stations that have gained notoriety for attacking other communities.
Some of the radios are owned by politicians who use them to advance their selfish agenda, to remain in power and amass more wealth. Let’s use radio as a tool for development and not division.
