I recently attended a tax sensitisation forum organised by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and we could not help laughing when one of the attendees asked when she will claim VAT charged on items she has been buying at the supermarket.
Apparently, someone advised her to keep records of all the ETR receipts she gets at the point of payment for her household goods because some day, she will claim the VAT charged from KRA.
Fortunately, KRA has been organising frequent taxpayers' sensitisation forums, which give taxpayers an opportunity to clear such misconceptions. This is good. However, more needs to be done to supplement KRA's efforts of sensitising taxpayers.
The Government needs to introduce the basics of taxation in our system of education.
