Kirinyaga Woman rep Njeri Maina was among several people who were injured after her supporters and those of Governor Ann Waiguru clashed at the Kirinyaga Police Station.
Maina sustained serious head injuries and was treated at the Kirinyaga County Referral Hospital before being transferred to the Nairobi Hospital for specialized care.
She had accompanied Baragwi MCA David Mathenge to the police station to record a statement over the vandalizing of a water project by the county government on Friday, August 18.
After recording the statement, the two leaders and their supporters were attacked by a rival group which disrupted their press address.
The confrontation ended and the two leaders together with their supporters went to march on the streets of Kirinyaga town and were again attacked by a group that pelted them with stones, hitting Maina on the head.
Governor Waiguru condemned the incident saying that she learnt of the attack through the media.
"I wish to condemn any acts of violence and reiterate that, no matter the reason we don't condone tolerate violence," she wrote on Facebook.
"I therefore urge the police to take immediate action against those involved."
