The Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) is taking proactive steps to prioritize the health and well-being of its members by launching a wellness program aimed at imparting health education and identifying potential health risks.

Speaking during the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Nairobi, SJAK President James Waindi emphasized that the initiative is a game-changer in promoting healthier lifestyles among sports journalists.

“Healthy and happy journalists are naturally more productive. Through this campaign, our members will have a reduced risk of health issues and lower healthcare expenses,” Waindi remarked.

The program will feature webinars and training seminars led by medical experts to raise awareness of lifestyle diseases and their prevention. Members will also have the opportunity to achieve health-related milestones and earn rewards, encouraging them to embrace wellness actively.

Ampher Apidi, a member who attended the meeting virtually, hailed the program as an essential and timely initiative. “This is a critical step for our association. As a wellness ambassador, I am ready to help make this vision a reality,” Apidi said.

SJAK Secretary General Moses Wakhisi highlighted the association’s plans to deepen engagement with stakeholders and launch corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs as proposed by Mombasa based sports veteran Anthony Aroshe.

He noted that these efforts would empower members while extending support to underprivileged communities.

“We are committed to strengthening our partnerships with stakeholders while broadening our reach through CSR initiatives. This will ensure a lasting impact for our members and the community,” Wakhisi stated.

The association expressed its gratitude to long-term partners, including the Ministry of Sports, LG Electronics East Africa, and KCB Bank, for their unwavering support.

The Ministry of Sports facilitated a members’ empowerment program that saw 13 journalists cover prestigious events such as the FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic.

LG Electronics continues to sponsor the SJAK Sports Personality of the Month awards, while KCB Bank supports various activities, including the Sports Day and training workshops.

With the wellness program now in motion, SJAK is setting a high standard for prioritizing its members’ health and professional development.
