Eddie Butita takes a stand, rejects Finance Bill amid backlash

Kenyan comedian and actor Eddie Butita has publicly declared his opposition to the Finance Bill 2024, following criticism for not taking a stance earlier.

Butita addressed the issue on his Instagram, stating, "Recently, I have faced criticism for not publicly stating my position on the Finance Bill 2024. I want to address the issue directly and share the state of affairs surrounding my recent actions."

He acknowledged the frustration many Kenyans feel with the current system, saying, "It is clear that we need a proper structure to ensure our voices are heard and represented effectively. Often, our leaders lose touch with those they represent. The results are what is happening currently."

Butita admitted that he has avoided political stands in the past but feels compelled to speak out now.

"Over the years, I have shied away from making political stands, but I agree this is not a political moment. With my status, my silence is not warranted. It 'creases.'"

Expressing his concerns about the bill, he said, "The Finance Bill, as it stands, is not okay. I played a role and submitted my concerns and will do it again when needed because I am a citizen and a businessman. I want the best for my countrymates, family, friends, and colleagues."

He concluded his statement with a clear rejection of the bill: "All said and done, it is time to publicly make my position official. I, Eddie Butita, #RejectFinanceBill2024. It is time to listen. We cannot be all wrong. Hayaa basi, Gen Z nitafutieni t-shirt kali nireport kwa ofisi."

For the past week, Butita has faced criticism for not joining the protests against the bill, which have erupted across the country.

Many protesters, primarily from the Gen Z generation, accused him of being too close to the state, especially after he participated in President William Ruto's state visit to the United States in late May.

Butita was part of President Ruto's 30-plus delegation to the United States, where he and other comedians mingled with global stars, including show host Steve Harvey.

The Finance Bill 2024 has sparked widespread criticism in Kenya, with many citizens expressing their discontent and urging celebrities to use their platforms to oppose it.
