The Nairobi Hospital dismisses report of a takeover by splinter group

[File, Standard] The management of Nairobi Hospital has denied claims of a leadership change, dismissing reports of a hostile takeover by a splinter group. Dr Barcley Onyambu clarified that he remains the duly elected Chairman of the Board of Management of the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA), which operates Nairobi Hospital. "I wish to categorically state that no changes have occurred at the helm of the Kenya Hospital Association or Nairobi Hospital, and I remain the Chairman of the Board of Management," he said during a governance retreat in Naivasha. Onyambu emphasised that any leadership transition at the institution should follow due process, which has not taken place to formalise any changes at the board level. "There is no legal or court order requiring us to vacate the office, and while mechanisms for leadership changes exist, they have not been triggered," he explained. The chairman accused certain individuals of attempting to mislead the public by promoting a false narrative, describing these attempts as baseless. Onyambu pointed to longstanding political interference and internal conflicts that continue to plague the hospital, undermining service delivery and burdening the institution with costly litigation. "We seek to strengthen our Articles of Association and governance framework to reduce these disputes and ensure that effective healthcare services remain our core mandate," Onyambu stated. He assured the public that the board remains focused on enhancing clinical governance, patient safety, and infrastructure. He added that the hospital maintains over 70 percent bed occupancy and steady revenue flow. Onyambu remarked that individuals driven by interests contrary to clinical excellence would not deter the board from its mission to restore the hospital to its former glory in the region. Kenya Hospital Association Vice Chairman Mr. Samson Kinyanjui confirmed that any attempts to take over the institution's leadership have been unsuccessful, affirming their commitment to safeguarding the hospital's interests. Kinyanjui stated that the board has pledged continued dedication to its mandate and will not hesitate to take swift legal action against those tarnishing the hospital's reputation and disrupting healthcare delivery at the institution.
