AA Kenya launches nationwide road safety campaign targeting schools

The Automobile Association of Kenya (AA Kenya) is taking road safety to the grassroots by engaging school students and parents in a campaign to reshape how Kenyans think about safe driving.

Through its nationwide Best Driver Challenge, the association seeks to foster a culture of responsibility starting from the school for the safety of learners who are the majority pedestrians.

AA Kenya is rolling out road safety sensitisation forums in schools and is urging parents to lead by example.

Students, especially in secondary schools, are being encouraged to form Junior Road Safety Clubs supported by the AA Junior Membership, a programme designed to embed safety values in young people through gamified learning, digital tools, and peer-led activities.

The campaign is also open to drivers of private cars, public service vehicles, trucks, boda boda riders, and corporate fleet operators.

Through theoretical and practical evaluations, drivers are tested on their knowledge of road rules, defensive driving techniques, vehicle safety, and behavior under pressure.

"Our goal is to celebrate the everyday heroes who put safety first. But safety doesn't begin with adults behind the wheel, it begins at home, in our schools, and in how we teach the next generation to value life on the road," said AA Kenya CEO Francis Theuri.

The campaign is expected to culminate in a national grand finale on July 19, 2025, in Nairobi, where regional winners from Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyeri, and the capital will battle it out for the title of Best Driver Kenya 2025.

The top prize includes a trophy, a cash award, national recognition, and certification as an AA Kenya Road Safety Ambassador.

The national winner will then carry Kenya's flag at a continental Best Driver Challenge in Naivasha, a flagship event bringing together top drivers from across Africa in a celebration of discipline, skill, and responsibility.

"This is not just about competition, it's about changing mindsets. If we can instill the value of road safety in our children today, we secure safer roads for tomorrow," Theuri said.
