Karen Nyamu's lollipop incident at Raila Odinga's AUC event sparks debate

Karen Nyamu's lollipop incident at Raila Odinga's AUC event sparks debate.

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has sparked a heated debate online after a video surfaced of her sucking a lollipop during the official launch of Raila Odinga's African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship bid at State House.

The event, which took place on Tuesday, was attended by various dignitaries and leaders from across the region, including President William Ruto.

The video, shared by Sauti TV, shows Nyamu casually walking around with the lollipop in her mouth while greeting some of the dignitaries present.

Her actions did not sit well with many Kenyans on social media, who took to various platforms to express their disapproval.

One social media user, Makau Muli, questioned Nyamu’s behavior, writing, "Come on Karen Nyamu! Change of rules of etiquette? A lollipop in front of dignitaries during the launch of Raila Odinga's AUC Chair bid!"

Another user on X (formerly Twitter) commented, "Hapa Sina hata maoni. But always remember, there is someone who nominated her to her current position, her etiquette withstanding. I end it at that!"

Pizilee, another user, emphasised the importance of proper representation, stating, "Good representation is always important."

Richard Ondimu also chimed in, saying, "I mean, even kids know you shouldn't suck on a lollipop in a formal setting such as a classroom."

However, not everyone was critical of Nyamu’s actions. A user named Antonius suggested there might be a deeper meaning behind the lollipop, writing, "You people, did you do literature? She did that on purpose after what the president said!! Loosen up people."

President William Ruto, who led the launch of Odinga’s candidature, praised him as a pan-Africanist and the right candidate for the AUC chairmanship. Ruto noted that Odinga's election would be a win for the entire continent.

Nyamu posted photos of herself posing with Raila Odinga on her social media pages, captioning them, "Man of the moment. Baba Raila Amolo Odinga and next AUC Chair. Kenya is united to back your candidacy. Our prayers and best wishes, Sir."
