Lusaka roots for agribusiness, value addition to drive Bungoma's economy

Governor Kenneth Lusaka has urged Bungoma residents, especially the youth, to embrace agribusiness and value addition as the foundation for economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods.

Speaking during the Farmers Field Day at Mabanga Agricultural Training Centre (ATC), Lusaka reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revolutionizing the agricultural sector, which he described as the backbone of the county’s economy.

“Agriculture is the backbone of our economy. I urge our farmers, especially the youth, to tap into agribusiness and value addition along the value chain. That’s where real empowerment lies,” Lusaka said.

He praised the Farmers Field Day programme for promoting agricultural knowledge exchange and innovation, noting that Mabanga ATC remains a strategic hub for transforming farming practices in the region.

“Mabanga ATC is a valuable asset. It is well-equipped to offer expertise and modern farming techniques. We intend to fully utilize its potential and make it a centre of excellence for agricultural learning and demonstration,” he said.

Lusaka revealed that the county plans to utilise available land at Mabanga ATC for large-scale maize production and other crops to support the free Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) feeding programme.

He also highlighted ongoing efforts to empower farmers through free farm inputs, subsidized fertilizer, and strategic partnerships under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), which he said has boosted Bungoma’s agricultural profile globally.

“We have seen improved harvests across the county due to timely distribution of inputs. I urge farmers not to sell their maize cheaply; let’s guard our gains and add value,” he said.

The governor announced the allocation of Sh19 million for a grader and the construction of a warehouse at Musese Coffee Mill, alongside Sh24 million for a coffee roasting and packaging unit at Mt Elgon Coffee Mill. He added that the county is engaging potential international markets to secure premium prices for Bungoma coffee.

“Our goal is to ensure farmers benefit from premium prices,” he said, reiterating his focus on making agriculture a profitable and youth-driven enterprise.
