St Peter's Mumias edge closer to rugby 7s title

The battle for Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSSA) rugby Sevens title continued yesterday as national champions St Peter's Mumias remained on pole position to reclaim the title they last won in 2016.

St Peter’s Mumias saw off rivals Koyonzo 12-7 in a tense match to maintain their lead at the top of the round-robin table.

They later followed the win with a 26-7 victory over Mbarara from Uganda. The Kakamega County heavyweights have registered six wins and a draw to top the table with 20 points.

Bungoma High School follow St Peter’s, also with 20 points, after edging Bwake 14-7 and London College from Uganda 26-7. St Peter’s and Bungoma are separated by one point-difference.

Other results saw London College beat Gitisi from Rwanda 14-12, Mbarara beat Kisubi 12-7, while St Joseph’s Girls Kitale edged Paul Harris 15-0.

Former champions Koyonzo, who also lost to Bwake 14-12, are out of the title race after their two defeats.

“It was a tough outing for us. The boys gave their all but we lost due to some slight mistakes. We pick lessons and aim for a strong finish today. These boys are talented and they have a bright future,” said Koyonzo coach Elly Okwemba.

In football, Madira Girls were shown dust after losing 2-0 to St Noah from Uganda, while Agai High School continued with their impressive run after thrashing Benjamin Mkapa from Tanzania 3-0.

National boys’ football champions St Joseph’s Kitale edged out Rwanda’s Rugunga 2-1 while Highway High School lost 2-0 to Amus College from Uganda.

Musingu School on the other hand were held to a 0-0 draw by Buddo Secondary from Uganda.
