Baringo Senator William Cheptumo dies

Baringo Senator William Cheptumo is dead.

Cheptumo passed on at Nairobi Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.

President William Ruto led the nation in mourning, describing Cheptumo as a progressive leader dedicated to public service.

"He was vocal, hardworking and a tireless champion for the transformation of Baringo," Ruto said.

"The Cheptumo family, friends and the people of Baringo County are in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace, Mheshimiwa."

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi also paid tribute, noting Cheptumo's commitment to devolution.

"The Senate of Kenya has lost a leader who firmly believed in devolution and used every opportunity to advance its cause and the welfare of Kenyans," Kingi said.

Cheptumo was first elected as Member of Parliament for Baringo North in 2007 and served three terms. He later became Baringo Senator in 2022 on a United Democratic Alliance ticket.

Cheptumo also served as Assistant Minister of Justice, National Cohesion & Constitutional Affairs and chaired the Senate National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations Committee.

Eldama Ravine MP Musa Sirma confirmed Cheptumo passed away around 10:15 a.m., calling it a great loss to his family, friends, and the nation.

Earlier in February, Baringo Nominated MP Bishop Jackson Kosgei had said Cheptumo was recovering at home after being discharged from hospital.

Kosgei and Mogotio MP Reuben Kiborek had urged the public to continue praying for his recovery.
