A mudslide has cut off part of the Kabarnet-Eldama Ravine Road, cutting off access to remote villages in Baringo County.

Transport was paralysed along the road that connects Eldama Ravine, Baringo Central, Mogotio, and Baringo South sub-counties.

Sylus Kipsang, a driver plying the route said that upon arriving at Kabasis, he was shocked to find that a section of the road had been cut off.

Luckily, the road was not busy when the incident occurred and Kipsang was able to drive through the passable section.

“The problem is that the road is hilly and rocky, and part of it has been swept, we hope for a quick response and solution from the Ministry of Roads,” he said.

He said drivers have resorted to using a dangerous section that is foggy due to rain making it difficult to make manoeuvres on the meandering road.

Michael Boinet, the Director of Disaster Management said the incident occurred following heavy rains in the area.

Boinet urged motorists to be cautious to avoid causing accidents and trees falling due to heavy rain.

“Parents, kindly be careful in ensuring that our children are attended to and they should be in the company of an adult to avoid disaster,” he said.

Baringo County Commissioner Stephen Kutwa said the mudslide occurred at around 4 am in Kabasis.

Kutwa urged residents to use alternative roads to avoid a disaster saying Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) had already been notified about the incident.

"The mudslide has affected roads in terms of travel, the soil is loose, KeRRA has been notified and we are hoping for a quick response, but we advise locals to exercise caution,” he said.
