Nyandarua Senator John Methu has now claimed sustained efforts to fragment the Mt Kenya region’s political base to ensure it does not vote as one bloc.
He made the remarks as he revealed attempts to lure him into leaving the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) and forming his own political outfit, with a Sh10 million weekly promise and ultimately, becoming President William Ruto’s running mate.
If he were to name moles within the opposition, Methu said that among the names that would feature prominently is Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, whom he claims he has had to fight off several times.

The Senator gave a scenario on why he would point an accusing finger against Nyoro, saying that after the Ol Kalou by-elections, a person he did not name from government called him for a meeting to congratulate him on the outcome, which had seen DCP secure its first elective seat.
“The person who is in government told me he had a message for me and I went. He told me that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has a case in court and therefore he will not run. You (Methu) have made yourself a name from Ol Kalou and the next person from Gachagua is yourself,” Methu said in a televised interview.
“You cannot wait to be made a ‘king’; you have to grab this thing and we want to help you to grab it. The only other person who can hold a meeting anywhere in Mt Kenya and get general acceptability is yourself, but you cannot grow when you are in Gachagua’s party,” Methu said he was informed.
According to Methu, he was advised to have his own party, which would be his vehicle to also participate as an equal principal in the united opposition.
He said money incentives were offered to start off and Sh10 million weekly to advance the new party's ideals.
In addition, he said he was promised swift registration of the party, complete with aspirants being seconded and he would also get people to donate materials to support the new political outfit he was to register.
“We will then be fighting the party so that you can look like an opposition person; we will not be working like we are together and we will raise your profile. This will be a pilot and if it works, we can converge at the tail end and you can become Ruto’s running mate,” he said.
“I could not believe my ears. I listened to that story but said I did not have any other ambition other than being Senator in 2027. I have no intention of becoming a party leader now; I’m just 35 years old. I have a huge political life ahead,” Methu added.
He said the first person he informed about what had happened was Gachagua and then Nyoro, whom he regarded as a personal friend.
But Methu said Nyoro dismissed the promises, saying the intention is to divide Mt Kenya votes because the Government is afraid of a united ‘mountain’ and does not want one party for the region.
“He (Nyoro) told me that, even though they may reach out to all of us, we must all refrain from forming parties because we will be splitting our votes. Ruto does not want, say, 100 MPs from Mt Kenya to be from one party because, in the unlikely event he were to win, he would not have his way,” Methu narrated.
According to Methu, Nyoro was initially considering joining DCP and that would have automatically positioned him second to Gachagua.
“When I heard him say he had his own party, I could not believe my ears because that was not the discussion we had. That is not the discussion we had; he had told me that another party is a creation of Ruto. Murang’a Governor, Irungu Kang’ata, also told me the same people had approached him to form a party,” Methu said.
The Senator also recounted that he had been offered Sh30 million to abstain from Gachagua’s impeachment and wondered whether Nyoro got the same offer, since he did not vote either way.
“Look at all these things. If it quacks like a duck, then it is a duck. Ruto is working hard to make them fragment, particularly the Mt Kenya vote. If I were to name moles, Nyoro’s name would feature very prominently,” he noted.
But Nyoro has since dismissed the claims, terming them juvenile.
“We have no time to respond to Juvenile and childish attacks and lies. Let the one sending them say it directly and we will respond accordingly. Tupatane Kajiado County kesho (let us meet in Kajiado today (Tuesday),” Nyoro posted on his social media pages.
After launching his People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) in August, Nyoro admitted that he projected being misjudged owing to his previous relations with the ruling party and Ruto.
Nyoro said he will work with other opposition partners to agree on a common candidate to run for presidency, saying a comprehensive conversation must be held before that decision is taken.
