Gachagua's return: Murkomen downplays security fears

Gachagua announced he was cutting short his US visit to join his party in preparations for upcoming by-elections.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has dismissed growing security concerns over the return of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is expected back in the country on Thursday after a six-week visit to the United States.

Speaking in Murang’a County during the ongoing Jukwaa la Usalama forum, Murkomen said Gachagua’s arrival should not be a cause for alarm, insisting that security agencies were adequately prepared to respond to any disruptions.

“There are so many people landing in Kenya every day, so I don’t know why we should be worried about one person landing,” Murkomen stated.

He noted that the country had remained peaceful during Gachagua’s absence but stressed that law enforcement was on high alert.

“In the last few weeks, when he has not been around, the country has been very peaceful. So perhaps, as you say, security agencies should be prepared for a more chaotic environment as a result of his coming back,” Murkomen stated.

During the forum, Murkomen also declared war on criminal gangs re-emerging in parts of Central Kenya that have been terrorizing the locals.

“These criminal gangs are thriving because of political influence. They are extorting locals and seeking cover from politicians. These are the same groups mobilised for demonstrations. We are going to be firm in our approach," he added.
