Residents of Kakuma Town in Turkana West Sub-County staged protests against the Turkana County Government, accusing the leadership of sidelining the region through what they termed unfair administrative decisions and mismanagement of personnel and public resources.

The demonstrators took to the streets carrying placards and chanting slogans, demanding accountability and equitable treatment in county affairs.

They claimed that recent decisions by county officials have disproportionately affected Turkana West, leaving residents feeling marginalised.

In a joint statement, the residents cited several incidents they said had fuelled their dissatisfaction, including the alleged harassment of County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Patrick Lokaimoe and what they termed as unprocedural transfers of county staff.

Particular concern was raised over the transfer of Kakuma Municipality Manager Peter Emuria, shortly after he secured KSh 586 million in funding from the World Bank to support municipal development projects.

“We are deeply concerned about the recent transfer of the Kakuma Municipality Manager, Mr. Peter Emuria, immediately after he successfully concluded the process of establishing the municipality,” part of the statement read.

“The timing of his transfer coming just after the release of sh586 million from the World Bank for development raises serious questions and appears unjustified.”

Residents argued that the move could disrupt ongoing development plans at a time when Kakuma Municipality is poised for significant transformation.

The municipality is expected to undergo a major facelift aimed at improving infrastructure and service delivery in the rapidly growing urban centre.

Protesters further alleged that key administrative roles have increasingly excluded locals, while some resources meant for Turkana West have allegedly been relocated elsewhere.

They described these actions as politically driven, especially as the country gradually shifts focus toward the 2027 General Election.

“We will not allow administrative decisions to be politicised or development funds to be misused. Kakuma deserves fair treatment and transparency in how public resources are managed,” local protester James Lokol said.

Kakuma Municipality, which hosts over 300,000 refugees of different nationalities alongside the local population, plays a critical role in the region’s socio-economic landscape.

Residents say stable leadership and proper management of funds are crucial to sustaining growth and promoting peaceful coexistence.

The group has now called on the county leadership to review the contested decisions, ensure inclusivity in governance, and safeguard development funds meant to uplift Turkana West.
