Revealed: What Raila suffered from

The medic stated that Raila initially had no detectable pulse or blood pressure.

Efforts by a team of doctors to resuscitate former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga at a hospital in India proved futile on Wednesday, leading to his sudden death.

According to Dr. Alphonse, a  Cardiologist at Devamatha Hospital, Raila, 80, was brought to the hospital’s emergency unit at around 8:20 a.m. after collapsing during his routine walk near Sreethariyam Ayurvedic Hospital.

Doctors immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before transferring him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further management.

"Upon arrival, medical teams continued resuscitation efforts, including emergency intubation and administration of clot-dissolving medication," the doctor revealed.

The medic stated that Raila initially had no detectable pulse or blood pressure.

"An ECG ( electrocardiogram, a test that records the electrical activity of the heart over time) conducted in the ICU showed signs of cardiac distress, including ST elevation and reduced heart wall movement, indicating a possible heart attack," she added.

The hospital’s chief physician said Raila had a history of diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. 

He also had a right leg deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and was fitted with an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter. 

Additionally, he recently suffered a minor subdural hematoma that had been managed by a neurosurgeon.

Despite continuous CPR from 8:00am, until 9:52 am, doctors were unable to revive him.

“We are deeply sorry to inform you that he is no more with us. Our sincere condolences and prayers go to his family and the people of Kenya,” said the attending physician in a statement.

Raila died at the age of 80 after collapsing during a morning walk at an Ayurvedic hospital in India.
