Kenya youth urged to apply for government tenders

MURANG’A COUNTY:  The percentage of youth applying for tenders to work with the Murang’a county government is reportedly low compared to the number of youth in the region.

Murang’a County Youth Director Christine Wanjira said a team has been formed to teach the youth how to go about applying for government tenders.

Addressing hundreds of youth from Kiharu constituency, Wanjira said the 30 per cent tenders reserved for youth may end up being given out if the youth fail to apply for them.

She said reports show that only about 10 per cent of local youth have submitted their applications seeking to work with the government in the next financial year.

Wanjira said millions of shillings have been allocated to support youth development programmes but only a few have turn up to claim their place in working with the government.

“We are urging youth to come out and apply to provide services to the county government and other private entities as a way of earning income,” said the youth director

 “It has been observed that youth from Murang’a are shying away from applying to work or render services to the government, this must come to an end,” she said.

Wanjira further divulged that youth have also declined to apply for the Uwezo Fund that is meant to support their developmental activities.

The Murang’a county government, she said, has given youth privileges allocating them local purchase orders so as to empower them in service delivery.

Youth department, she said, has kicked off sensitisation forums to help youth understand all the requisite processes.
