Nyali's Charles Rob command's the Kenya Navy Commander's golf tournament

Home Club’s Charles Rob was crowned the Best Gross player of the day in the 2024 Kenya Navy Commander's Golf tournament played at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club Course in Mombasa County over the weekend.

The handicap 4 golfer carded an excellent two over par 73 gross to claim the top prize in the day long tournament that attracted 215 golfers drawn across the Country.

“It gives me great pleasure having won this category after many months and I shall continue to practice more to record more victories in the coming months, “said Rob.

In the Kenya Defence Forces Golf Association (KDFGA) category, handicap 11 Major Joel Mochanga dominated the scene for the Men returning a score of 36 points to claim the A Division beating handicap 7 H. Wanyama to the runners up slot by a single shot difference.

The Lady section in the same category was led by handicap 29 Orpha Wamaitha on an excellent score of 45 points as handicap 20 Grace Kwamboka claimed the runners up slot with 39 points.

The B division was won by handicap 28 Maj.Gen (Rtd) Anthony Rob on 44 points and handicap 26 Maj.Gen. Thomas Ngan’ga brought 39 points to win the runners up slot.  

Handicap 21 Jacob Chacha with a score of 36 points was the KDFGA Club’s Men winner and handicap 27 Carol Nthiwa returned 41 points to win the same for the Ladies.

The Division A Member winner on 47 points was handicap 20 Tim McClanahan and the B division was won by handicap 29 George Nesbitt with a score of 47 points.

Handicap 20 Zaituni Mohamed returned 40 points to win the Member lady Division A section and Handicap 39 Joan Kimani with 38 points was the winner of the same in Division B.

Ijaz Sheikh playing off handicap 25 was the Senior winner on 42 points and handicap 35 Waithera Mbugua went home with the Junior prize after recording 37 points.

Other prizes included the Guest lady winner that was won by handicap 26 Jedidah Keity on 38 points, while handicap 17 Felix Kiamba carded 42 points to win the same for Men section.

Phane Kerubo went home with the Sponsor Lady prize after returning 36 points and the same for the Men was scooped by Peter Ndicho with a score of 41 points and Professional Golfers Kevin Mabele and Fred Kamau both received the Professional Appreciation tokens.

Lt. Col.Githui’s shot 2.5 feet away from the 18th hole to earn the nearest to the pin prize while youthful   Alyssa Jamal and Omar Lewa were the longest drive Women and Men winners respectively.

The tournament was jointly supported by Kingdom Bank, Kenya Meat Commission, Kenya Nuts,SIKA, Crown paints, Kenya Coast Guards and Alomo Bitters.

Club Vice Captain Allan Mola said it was a great pleasure and proud to have hosted the event being the first one and hoped that the relationships will continue to grow further.

“We are delighted to host the Kenya Defence Forces golf team here today in a successful event and may God continue blessing us all in supporting this sport of Golf, “said Mola.

KDFGA Patron Maj.Gen.Kinuthia Mbugua said they were happy with the large turnout and appreciated all those who participated to make the event enjoyable and successful.

“We are happy to have the tournament played here at Nyali. Thank you all for your support and look forward to  further strengthening our relations as we  try to engage more with members of the Public to make the sport enjoyable,”said Mbugua.

He announced that Kenya will be hosting the World Military Golf Tournament next year and urged the Kenya Defence Forces Golfers to lower their handicaps in order to compete aggressively with their colleagues from the other parts of the World.

The Nyali tournament was also graced by among others the Chief of Defence Forces, General Charles Muriu Kahariri, the KDFGA Chairman Brig.Timothy Lekolol, The Outgoing KDFGA Chairman Brig. Joseph Muracia, KDFGA Patron and Commander of Kenya Navy Maj.Gen. Paul Otieno and several Officers both serving and Retired.
