AFCON 2025: Why Harambee Stars captain Olunga is not worried by Cameroon's favorites tag

Returning Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga believes the national team has what it takes to upset Cameroon in their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers match in Douala, on Friday.

Olunga missed the opening two Group J matches last month due to injury, where Kenya drew 0-0 against Zimbabwe and secured a 2-1 victory over Namibia. 

Now, as the team sits at the top of the group alongside the Indomitable Lions with four points, Olunga is eager to prove his worth in the two-legged tie. After tomorrow’s encounter, Kenya, who travel to the West African nation with a chartered flight today, will fly to Kampala, Uganda for their second leg match on Monday.

"Cameroon are favourites, but we have quality as you can see the squad is good from the two matches played while I was away," Olunga stated, highlighting the team's potential. 

"Watching from the sidelines was tough, but I am back and ready to help the team.”

Kenya's position in the group makes this match pivotal. Both teams have four points, and a win could be decisive in the race for qualification.

"Starting away, we know we have to dig deep and get more points," Olunga noted, acknowledging the challenge that lies ahead.

He also expressed confidence in the young talent within the squad, stating, "The young team has quality and a blend of youth and experience."

 But as the team flies out to Cameroon, Olunga urged fans to be patient.

"Kenyans need to be patient with the team because we have been rebuilding," he said.

Head coach Engin Firat also weighed in on the team's preparation.

"We have been working hard in training sessions leading up to the match," he commented. 

"The players are adapting well to our strategies and understanding their roles better each day."

Firat's insights reflect a focus on improvement and tactical awareness, crucial elements for facing a team as formidable as Cameroon.

The Harambee Stars' recent performance, particularly the victory over Namibia, showcased their potential. Players have started to gel, creating a positive atmosphere within the squad. 

"Our recent matches have provided valuable insights into our strengths and areas to improve. I believe we are on the right path,” said Firat.

The match against Cameroon is set to be a litmus test for both the players and the coaching staff. 

With the stakes high, Olunga’s optimism is infectious. He is ready to lead by example and believes that with hard work and dedication, Harambee Stars can overcome the odds.
