Phillip Nzamba Kitonga was a renowned Kenyan politician and distinguished lawyer, best remembered for his pivotal role as the chairman of the defunct Committee of Experts on Constitutional Review.

This committee was responsible for drafting Kenya’s current Constitution, a document that has since led to significant reforms across the country.

With a professional career spanning over four decades, Kitonga stood out as one of Kenya's leading experts on election and constitutional law.

He was also a prominent voice in the politics surrounding the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), spearheaded by former President Uhuru Kenyatta and then-Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Kitonga's key contribution to the BBI was his idea of a hybrid governance system, which was ultimately adopted as part of the initiative's recommendations.

Known for his deep commitment to justice, Kitonga was regarded as a master of equal justice and left an indelible mark on the rule of law, not only in Kenya but also throughout East Africa and the broader Comesa region.

His intellectual brilliance and legal proficiency made him a respected figure in the legal community. He was passionate about human rights, dedicated to ensuring greater access to justice, and staunchly committed to upholding the rule of law.

On a personal level, Kitonga was known for his wit, integrity, humility, and unwavering love for justice.

His servant leadership and patriotism were qualities that earned him admiration across the board. His outstanding service and commitment to the legal profession were recognized in 2003 when then-President Mwai Kibaki conferred upon him the rank of Senior Counsel.

The following year, he was honoured with The Law Society’s Roll of Honour award.

Phillip Nzamba Kitonga passed away on October 24, 2020, at the age of 64, following a cardiac arrest. His legacy as a legal luminary and advocate for justice continues to resonate within Kenya and beyond.
