60 witnesses to testify in Makenzi case over Kwa Binzaro killings

At least 60 witnesses will testify against controversial preacher and suspected cult leader Paul Makenzi and his co-accused in a case involving radicalisation charges at the Shanzu Law Courts.

The prosecution said the witnesses will demonstrate how Makenzi allegedly orchestrated the Kwa Binzaro massacre while in remand at Shimo la Tewa Prison.

Prosecutor Alex Jami told the court yesterday that the prosecution could reduce the number of witnesses as the hearing progresses.

Makenzi, Sharleen Tembo, James Kahindi Kazungu, Thomas Mukonwe and Kahindi Kazungu Garama face murder and crimes against humanity charges linked to 52 deaths at the Kwa Binzaro forest in Kilifi County.

They also face charges of engaging in organised criminal activities and radicalisation.

Makenzi and Tembo additionally face charges of committing terrorist acts and possessing an article connected to an offence under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Four of the 60 witnesses are protected and have already testified before Senior Principal Magistrate Mwanamkuu Sudi.

Others include relatives of people who allegedly died or went missing, experts, first responders, neighbours, landlords, transporters and forensic specialists.
