Mystery as parliament chef stabbed dead in Rongai

Questions linger over the death of Parliament chef  Kamau Mungai Gathogo, who was fatally stabbed in Ongata Rongai on April 29.

 A knife, the very tool he used in his profession, is also believed to have been the weapon that ended his life. In the case now under investigation at Ongata Rongai Police Station, Mungai was stabbed at around 9pm, with police reporting a brief confrontation involving his girlfriend.

 Neighbours said Mungai returned home that night in the company of the woman, who had moved in about three weeks earlier. He had lived alone for nearly a year. Dennis Juma, a security guard, said Mungai arrived with his girlfriend and went into the house as usual.

 After a while, he heard noises but assumed Mungai was drunk. Moments later, the guard said a second woman arrived at the gate.

 “When I checked, I found lady who is not tenant. She told me she was coming to visit Mungai. When I asked her to call him first so that he can confirm, she said that he had been stabbed and there was no need of wasting time,” Juma said.

 The two women then rushed into the house and began screaming for help.Neighbours who responded said they found Mungai lying face down, soaked in blood.

“He was bleeding profusely and  could not talk at the time he was rushed to nearby Sinai hospital. They referred him to Kenyatta National Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” a neighbour said.

“Mungai was a very outgoing person within the plot and around the estate. It was until that night when I learnt that had been was living with a lady,” the neighbour added. 

Detectives visited the house on Saturday to collect evidence and establish what transpired between Mungai and the suspect, who is now detained.

 Benjamin Kiprono, the Ongata-Rongai Sub-County Police Commander, said officers responded to reports of a stabbing and found Mungai in “a serious condition.”

 He said the suspect is being questioned as investigations continue.

 Mungai’s body has since been moved to the mortuary.
