Kenyan swimmers' deep plunge
Rebecca Kamau finished in fifth position in the 200m individual medley race, an event won by legendary Zimbawean Kirsty Coventry on Thursday evening. Kamau timed 2:20.40 with Coventry (2:16.05), South African pair Marlies Ross and Rene Warnes in 2:17.57 and 2:18.98 and Rwioda Heshem of Egypt in 2:19.76.
Hamdan Bayusuf was sixth best in the men’s 100m backstroke, in 1:00.47, way behind another South African duo Richard Ellis and David de Villiers, who stopped the clock in 55.83 and 55.84. Two Egyptians — Mohamed Samy (55.84) and Mohamed Khaled (56.31) — followed, while an Algerian Riyad Djendouci was fifth.
In the women’s 50m freestyle, won by Farida Osman in 25.12 with South Africa’s Karin Prinsloo in second position, Sylvia Brunlehner finished sixth in 26.92.
The 4x100m medley mixed team finished sixth behind Egypt, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tunisia and Algeria. In Kenya’s team were Bayusuf, Kamau, Issa Abdellah and Brunlehner.
