The Mediheal Hospital, Eldoret, now says it is ready for scrutiny over allegations relating to organ transplants levelled against it.

While addressing the media in Nairobi on Tuesday, April 22, Conrad Maloba, the lawyer representing the facility in the kidney transplant saga, stated: “We are open to the audit processes and patients are ready to give their statements.”

His remarks came just hours after the National Assembly's Committee on Health announced an ongoing probe, with a report expected within 90 days.

According to the lawyer, the hospital will fully cooperate and has already begun auditing its files, assuring the media of a chance to speak to patients.

On the issue of donors, Maloba stated that the hospital does not handle donor recruitment, as patients come with their own.

“We are not involved with getting donors. Patients come with donors to us, but we follow the due processes and regulations,’’ he said.

Furthermore, on the issue of the Transplant Act, Maloba blamed the government for not streamlining its laws, adding that, for what it’s worth, the hospital is licensed to undertake kidney transplants.

“Kenya has come of age with regards to medicine. In the event that there are lacunas, there are regulations on how patient-donor relationships are undertaken. Certain regulations are not in place, but that is not on us. It is the role of the legislature.’’

Mediheal remains suspended from offering any organ transplant services pending investigations.
