Kenya's cycle of extreme hot weather repeatedly plunges arid and semi-arid areas into prolonged drought that comes with suffering for people and livestock.

After the current drought, we will experience heavy rains characterised by storms and floods in the same areas, and most of the water will go to waste because there are no elaborate earthen water storage dams.

The national government has begun building mega dams; however, county governments can reduce the vagaries of prolonged drought by de-silting existing water points, sand and natural dams in order to harvest adequate water.

Every ward in Kenya has at least one silted dam or water pan, which can help during drought.
