News by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, via a tweet, announcing that the company would be setting up its Africa presence in Ghana was received well by Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo. Through a series of tweets, President Nana said that it is the beginning of a beautiful partnership between the microblogging and social networking service and Ghana.
“The choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is EXCELLENT news. Gov’t and Ghanaians welcome very much this announcement and the confidence reposed in our country. As I indicated to @Jack in our virtual meeting of 7th April 2021, this is the start of a beautiful partnership between Twitter and Ghana, which is critical for the dev’t of Ghana’s hugely important tech sector. These are exciting times to be in, and to do business in Ghana,” Ghana’s President tweeted.
Earlier on, the CEO and co-founder of the American company based in San Francisco, California, United States, announced that Twitter has been well received in Ghana.
“Twitter is now present on the continent. Thank you Ghana and Nana Akufo-Addo,” tweeted Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. In a statement released to the press, Twitter further announced that it will recruit 11 people in Ghana. The jobs advertised include positions for engineering, marketing and communications specialists.
“Today, in line with our growth strategy, we’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana. To truly serve the public conversation, we must be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent,” the statement read in part.

In the statement, Twitter explained that it chose Ghana because of its strong support of freedom of expression and speech.
“As a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate. Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa,” said the statement.
Twitter further announced they are also looking at empowering the local community and hinted that they have already established foundations in the region.
“Whenever we enter new markets, we work hard to ensure that we are not just investing in the talent that we hire, but also investing in local communities and the social fabric that supports them. We have already laid foundations through partnerships with Amref Health Africa in Kenya, Afrochella in Ghana, Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) in Nigeria, and The HackLab Foundation in Ghana,” the statement added.
