William Ruto, born 21 December 1966 in Sambut village, Kamagut, to Daniel Cheruiyot and Sarah Cheruiyot, started his political career in 1992 when he was elected as Organizing secretary of Youth for Kanu, a group that drummed up support for then President Moi in the 1992 elections.
He ensured victory for Moi until 2002 when he supported Uhuru Kenyatta as the presidential candidate. He came second after Mwai Kibaki.
In 2007, Ruto pledged support for Raila Odinga and with his great command in the Rift Valley region, It was a close-up race between Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga, which ended in Mayhem.
Ruto stood with Raila until there was a coalition government. He was appointed as Minister for Agriculture.
In 2012, Ruto dumped Raila for Uhuru Kenyatta bringing in the large numbers from the Kalenjin community, ensuring a win for Uhuru Kenyatta.

In retaliation, Raila implicated Ruto for fueling violence and political unrest in the 2013 elections but the charges were later dropped by the ICC.
In 2017, he has still maintained his support to Uhuru Kenyatta and no matter how controversial the elections were, his running mate still won.
