Safety and surveillance in Lake Victoria has received a boost after the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) launched a search and rescue boat service.
The boat will be based in Kisumu, which authorities termed as strategic, given that the town is a port city. The authorities said the boat is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing collaborative efforts in maritime safety and security.
Governor Jack Ranguma said Lake Victoria is one of the great natural resources in Western, which the county government was using to create employment for residents. He said the county government has initiated the lakefront development, which aims at opening up the lake shores for economic exploitation.
"We want to use this lake as a tourist site," he said.
