Learning in Central Turkana is a dream yet to come true.
Lack of schools in the sub-county has increased levels of illiteracy. Mothers are not able to analyse information on their clinic cards because they can’t even read a word and so they don’t know when to next visit clinics.
In as much as reading and writing is basic to everybody, this is a major problem for the people living in this area.
Education still remains a centralised function and as such, the Government should step in set up learning centres in the area.
It should provide writing materials to the willing adult learners to encourage them to learn how to read and write. While students from other parts of the country learn in a good environment, a Turkana learner is lacking a book and pen to quench his thirst for knowledge.
