DPP Tobiko wants Mercy Keino’s murder inquest reopened

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Keriako Tobiko wants an inquest into the mysterious death of university student Mercy Keino reopened.

The DPP, through an application, told the court on Tuesday that crucial evidence was interfered with through being deleted, video footage edited or omitted and not presented in court during the hearing of the case.

However Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo directed trial magistrate that principal magistrate Peter Ndwiga, who was trying the case, be recalled to hear the application on November 11.

The hearing of the inquest into the death of the University of Nairobi student had concluded.

Ms Keino's disfigured body was discovered on Waiyaki Way two years ago after she attended a party hosted by Kiambu Governor William Kabogo at the Wasini Luxury Suites in Nairobi.

According to witnesses, Keino left the party upset after disagreeing with the governor, claims that he denied.

Evidence tabled in court showed that Kabogo beat Keino for 'misbehaving' after she allegedly got drunk and began hurling glasses and picture frames.

During previous hearings, it emerged that Keino and other girls were invited to the party through an online advertisement.

In February, government chief pathologist Johansen Oduor told an inquest that Keino sustained fatal injuries before her death, but acquired more injuries after death.

Closed-circuit Television (CCTV) footage showed the University of Nairobi student being roughed up by two men, who led her away.

Mercy Keino 'was drunk', court told

The video footage detailing the final movements of Mercy Keino has been sent back to the Cybercrime headquarters for review.

Principal Magistrate Peter Ndwiga ordered the footage be reviewed and further directed the police to single out critical points of the footage in a separate DVD.

"As the footage is reviewed, make extracts of the chaotic moments at the gate, terrace and bar," Ndiga said.

The footage was presented to the court by Inspector Edward Kiptum of the CID Scenes of Crime department.
