Mombasa, Kenya: As the clock struck midnight and Kenyans of all walks of life began celebrations to mark the country’s 50 years of independence, Mary Chan was simply tucking her bundles of joy to sleep.
She had just delivered twins, born right at the stroke of midnight.
Chan a restauranteur from Nairobi, bore the twins through caesarean section at the Mary Immaculate Hospital in Mombasa County.
Despite the ongoing strike, the maternity wings in public hospitals were reported to be operating normally by Wednesday midnight.
This was after the county government of Mombasa came up with measures to open up emergency wings in public and municipal hospitals in the county.
“I am happy for the blessing I have received,” a joyous Mary Chan said even though she said it was going to be difficult raising the twins.
According to Sr Frida Mwailogho, head nurse at the hospital, the twins, a boy and a girl, weighing 3 and 4 kilograms respectively, were in good health condition.
