NAIROBI, KENYA: The construction of Pangani affordable housing project will commence this week with contractors expected to move on site this week Friday.
Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday said work on the project would begin this Friday to allow for the redevelopment of Pangani estate in phase 1 of the housing project. Some 1,580 projects will be constructed in Pangani.
The Sh300 billion housing project seeks to put up a total 200,000 affordable housing units. Phase one of the project is expected to put up between 10,000 and 12,000 units. It covers old and new Ngara, Pangani, Jeevanjee-Bachelors, Ngong Road Inspectorate staff quarters, Uhuru and Suna Road.
“The contractors are expected to visit the site on Friday and lay ground for the works ahead. We are committed to developing the city and achieving affordable housing in line with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s big four agenda,” said Sonko.
The project was initially planned to commence in July 2016, but was hampered by challenges, including resistance by the tenants of the old houses, who said they suspected it was a ploy by the county government to throw them out.
