Cabinet Secretary for Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Ali Hassan Joho has asked gold dealers to get proper licenses to make their trade genuine.
The CS was speaking at BBS Mall in Eastleigh, Nairobi during the launch of the first gold market in the area bringing together various dealers.
The gold souk will not only sell golden jewelry but also a place where raw gold will be processed for value addition and ready for the global market.
“I am here not only to launch a gold market but also to reemphasize on our conversation that whatever we extract from the ground is value added here for the global market. Even as you do that ensure that you get proper licenses for your trade,” Joho told the traders.
The CS said the initiative to open the gold souk at the Mall touted as the largest in East and Central Africa was the right decision praising its security features.
“This will also enable our mission in the mining sector so that when we extract gold from the western part of the country and in the Northern region it can be brought in raw form and value-added and sold in the global market,” added Joho
Kamukunji Member of parliament Yussuf Hassan said the gold market will not only boost the trade in Eastleigh but also open job opportunities for more residents in the area.
