Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers have arrested a man suspected of swindling members of the public through blackmail.

According to a statement by EACC on Wednesday, November 1, the suspect, Shadrack Kariira was apprehended on Tuesday, October 31 at Turraco Bar on Thika Road and taken to Integrity Centre.

The suspect had been conning public officials and business persons in the disguise of a Senior Forensic Investigator at EACC claiming to have evidence of fraudulent activities against them.

In certain instances, he posed as a National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer, and other times, as a forensic investigator from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) unit.
His arrest comes following an investigation after the commission received a number of complaints from the public.

"EACC has been receiving numerous complaints of people posing as staff members of EACC, DCI, Police, NIS, and DPP, and asking for bribes from their victims, supposedly to help them out of corruption investigations," the Integrity Commission said.

Detectives began investigations on October 3, 2023, after several victims reported fraud cases against the said suspect.

Victims stated that the suspect used phone numbers to contact them claiming to be a senior Intelligence officer connected to EACC and top government offices.

"They cite certain investigations or files and tell the victims that they can help them avoid prosecution or suppress evidence," added EACC.

The commission has called on the public to be vigilant and help report any suspected fraudster activities through their toll-free number (1551).
