NAIROBI, KENYA: As clock ticks towards the August 28 deadline for plastic ban in Kenya, discussion now shifts to alternative packaging materials in the market.

On Thursday, 40 exhibitors gathered at Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC) to showcase various packaging alternatives.

The alternatives are eco-friendly bags made out of sisal fiber or newspapers and the prices range between Sh200-500.

Under the EcofriendlyKe hashtag on twitter, Kenyans expressed mixed reactions on the ban which will see offenders part with Sh4million fine or a four year jail term.

Are we really all set for the upcoming #PlasticBanKE? Nakumatt & Carrefour shoppers might be. But what about the kadogo economy?

#PlasticBanKe the fine of being found in possession of plastics is more than the penalty public looters and land grabbers get.

Supporters and enforcers of the ban have to consider all angles carefully. Otherwise the whole #PlasticBanKE thing will become very elitist.
