Nairobi, Kenya: Police are questioning a guard and a house girl following the attack on former Cabinet minister Maina Wanjigi and his wife Wambui at their Karen residence in Nairobi.
The two are assisting detectives with investigations after a gang of four, one armed with a pistol, raided the home and robbed the couple of two pistols, cash, jewellery and other valuables.
Wanjigi was badly burnt with a hot iron while his wife had nails driven into her body by the thugs who raided their home on Friday night.
Police and the family said the couple was discharged from hospital on Saturday after being treated.
“They were discharged from hospital but went back today (Sunday) for a check up. These are old people and need serious care,” said a family spokesman who asked not to be named.
Demand cash
Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue said police were yet to discover the motive behind the attack. They are holding the couple’s house girl and guard for questioning.
The couple are parents of businessman Jimmy Wanjigi.
Police said the gang gained entry into the house through the kitchen door that had apparently been left open.
They then went to the bedroom where the couple was and demanded cash and other valuables.
While making the demands, they tortured the elderly couple even after Mrs Wanjigi had handed them her box of jewellery.
“It seems they had misleading information on the couple or they had a different motive,” said a senior police officer.
