KENYA: Two people died on the spot while others were left nursing various injuries after three vehicles were involved in an accident along Kericho-Kisumu road.
Kericho OCPD Aphiod Nyaga, said the accident that involved a Mitsubishi lorry, a saloon car and a minibus occurred at 11:30 pm Friday night at a police roadblock near Kipsitet trading centre along the road.
Nyaga said the driver of the of the Mitsubishi lorry which was from Kericho side was over speeding and lost control of the vehicle metres to the police roadblock hitting a saloon car that was in front of it before ramming into a minibus from the opposite direction which had been flagged down for routine police inspection killing two passengers on the spot.
“The driver of the Mitsubishi lorry lost control of the vehicle metres to the road block, hit and swept a saloon car that was in front of it out of the road before ramming into a minibus from Kisumu side which police had flagged down for inspection killing two passengers,” Nyaga said.
The OCPD added that two occupants in the saloon car were lucky and escaped unhurt.
Nyaga said some of the injured passengers in the minibus were taken to Kericho District Hospital and others to various hospitals in Kisumu.
“We suspect that the lorry’s brakes failed but police will carry out further investigations to establish the real cause of the accident,” Nyaga said.
He added that police are looking for the driver of the ill-fated lorry who went underground after the accident.
The bodies of the deceased passengers were moved to Kericho District Hospital mortuary while the vehicles wreckages were towed to Kipsitet police post.
